Mau Forest and its environs does more than provide freshwater for millions of Kenyans. It also acts as an irreplaceable bulwark of Kenya's economy by supporting both tourism and agriculture. When the big five – lions, giraffes, rhinos, leopards and buffaloes – sip from the Mara River, they have the Mau to thank for their nourish because this vital river originates in the Mau.

To further appreciate the role of Mau and other water towers in our lives, we need to refocus on an overlooked area – sustainable consumption and production.

Considering that only 0.5 percent of the water produced by the earth is fresh and available for human consumption, we cannot afford to undermine the very production of that water by weakening water towers. If we do so, we will be biting the hand that feeds you and consequently sacrificing tomorrow on the altar of today's greed.

The twelfth Sustainable Development Goal has a message that is quite timely, ‘Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.' One of this Goal's targets speaks directly to Kenya's Mau predicament, ‘By 2030, achieve the sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources.'

We just have to drastically step up the sustainable management of our natural resources as a whole and our water towers in particular. The litmus test of sustainable management of natural resources is a simple, yet powerful question – is this action enhancing or depleting this natural resource? If a given action will enhance the natural resource in question, then we must step up that action. But if that action will deplete the natural resource, then we must halt that action as a matter of urgency.

I have faith that reason shall prevail and the Government will team up with all Kenyans of goodwill including forest adjacent communities to protect not just the Mau, but indeed all water towers and key natural resources across the country. Such collaboration will drive forward sustainable consumption and production without which there will be a vacuum for greed to creep into.Think green, act green!

Yours in Green,

Dr Isaac Kalua.
