Is Kenya a Just, Peaceful and Inclusive society? The honest answer to this question would be – not yet. Justice is more than prosecuting wrongdoers – it is also about ensuring that the downtrodden and voiceless in our society find a voice; a reason to wake up every morning and a decent job to occupy their days.

Last year, a study by the Institute of Security Studies (an African organization) ranked Kenya sixth among top 10 highly populated Sub-Saharan Africa countries living in extreme poverty. According to this report, 18 million Kenyans live below the poverty line.

In real terms, living below the poverty line means that more often than not, one doesn't know where the next meal or the next rent payment will come from. For eighteen million Kenyans to be subjected to such bare existence is one of the worst forms of injustice. We must as a nation confront the poverty in our midst as a moral obligation and as a matter of utter urgency. In this regard, all peace and justice loving Kenyans, especially our leaders must always combat poverty systematically and consistently.

The UN reports that globally, ‘corruption, bribery, theft and tax evasion cost some US $1.26 trillion for developing countries per year; this amount of money could be used to lift those who are living on less than $1.25 a day for at least six years.'

This statistic clearly shows that every act of corruption and crime keeps a poor person steeped in poverty. Against this backdrop, it becomes tragically evident that a few hundreds of people in this country are riding on the back of eighteen millions Kenyans. Such injustice cannot be allowed to go on because it is cancerous both to peace and to the well being of the vast majority of Kenyans.

A plea for peace is simultaneously a plea for poverty to be declared not just a national disaster but our national enemy Number One worthy of unprecedented national efforts to route it out!

Since this is a national effort, it falls on Conservationists like me to keep showing how sustainability can combat poverty, hence my consistent ‘Green Money' call. The same applies to you, whatever your profession or calling, Think green, act green!

Yours in Green,

Dr Isaac Kalua.
